In his first address to a joint session of Congress, President Trump offered a much softer tone and defended his tumultuous presidential start. He said he was excited and open to extend his hand across party lines and vows to represent the entire United States.
Trump asked Congress to unite together to work on health care, taxes, infrastructure and military. However, what surprised most was his tone on immigration. Hours before his speech, Trump softened on his once firm position. He suggested that a legal path to citizenship be granted to millions of undocumented immigrants who have not committed crimes. This position comes as a surprise to especially those who supported him during the campaign. While he never mentioned his softer tone on immigration in his speech, he did offer an overall more optimistic view.
He ended his speech with “The time for small thinking is over, the time for trivial fights is behind us. “From now on, America will be empowered by our aspirations, not burdened by our fears.”
